Project Zomboid Review http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/206/ProjectZomboidReview/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/206/ProjectZomboidReview/ Mon, 4 Nov 2024 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Surviving the Apocalypse, 1 day at a time

If you're a fan of survival horror and are looking for a deep, challenging experience, Project Zomboid should be high on your list. Created by indie developer The Indie Stone, this zombie apocalypse survival game is unlike many others, combining a punishing difficulty with surprising depth, all wrapped in retro graphics reminiscent of The Sims. It’s currently available on Steam in Early Access, where it continues to evolve with updates and community feedback.

Gameplay

At its core, Project Zomboid is about survival—not just against hordes of zombies but also against hunger, thirst, injuries and the elements. One of the most satisfying parts of the game is finding and fortifying a base, turning an abandoned building into your own stronghold. As you scavenge for supplies and materials, you’ll learn how to construct walls, doors, and barricades to defend against the undead. But safety comes at a cost; even in a fortified base, you’ll have to venture out to hunt for food, medical supplies, and tools, putting you at constant risk.

Resource gathering is essential. To secure your base, you’ll need wood for building and crafting, which often means chopping down trees or salvaging nearby materials. As you learn survival skills, you can craft everything from furniture to rain collectors, adding layers of customization to your base. Building, defending and scavenging makes each day feel both dangerous and rewarding.

Graphics & Atmosphere

The graphics have a retro charm, feeling similar to The Sims. The top-down isometric view is simplistic, but it fits the tone, allowing you to focus on survival rather than flashy visuals. Despite the basic visuals, the game's atmosphere is haunting. The sound design is top-notch, with eerie ambient noises that heighten tension, especially during nighttime or when you're trying to sneak past zombies.

Pros

 • Realism & Depth: From hunger to depression, Project Zomboid considers every aspect of surviving in a zombie apocalypse.
 • Base-Building: Building and fortifying a base adds a strategic layer to survival, allowing for creativity and replayability.
 • Customization: Sandbox mode lets you customize zombie behavior, loot rarity and other settings, allowing for a unique experience each time.
 • Multiplayer Fun: Teaming up with friends to scavenge and defend your safe house adds a social, strategic element that enhances the experience.

Cons

 • High Difficulty: This game is not for everyone, as it has a steep learning curve and can be unforgiving, especially for newcomers.
 • Outdated Graphics: While the graphics work for some, others may find the retro visuals a bit too basic in 2024’s era of high-definition gaming.
 • Limited Narrative: The game is light on story, so if you're looking for character-driven narratives or quests, it might feel a bit empty.

Verdict

Project Zomboid is a game with incredible depth that shines for players who enjoy hardcore survival challenges. It’s not visually flashy, and its difficulty can be punishing, but if you’re willing to immerse yourself in its unique, sandbox-style world, there’s nothing quite like it. Available on Steam in Early Access, Project Zomboid is a hidden gem that offers a brutal yet rewarding survival experience—just be prepared to die. Often.

Unity U-Turn On Runtime Fee Charges http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/199/UnityUTurnOnRuntimeFeeCharges/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/199/UnityUTurnOnRuntimeFeeCharges/ Thu, 12 Sep 2024 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming A while back, there was uproar in the development scene, as Unity proposed a new charging model and revenue share scheme that impacted many small to medium development companies (not to mention some indie devs with popular titles).

This could well have closed down some struggling companies and lost a lot of faith in the developer community.
There was revolt and even users moving to Unreal or other platforms because of it.

Finally they have backed down on this, here is their official response:

"Hi there,

After months of consultation with our games community and customers, we’ve made the decision to cancel the Runtime Fee, effective immediately. We’re keeping our existing seat-based subscription model, and we will not be charging any revenue share.

We are also updating Unity subscription plans in 2025. We’ll be increasing the price of Unity Pro subscriptions for the first time in over two years, and we’re offering a new, customized plan for Unity Enterprise customers.

We are committed to supporting the millions of creators who are just starting out. Unity Personal will remain free, and as announced last year, we’re raising the revenue limit to $200,000 USD so more people can access these tools.

Learn more about these changes and what they mean for you on the blog. Thank you for creating with Unity." - MATT BROMBERG President/CEO of Unity

Online Unity Games Fixed http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/198/OnlineUnityGamesFixed/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/198/OnlineUnityGamesFixed/ Wed, 13 Mar 2024 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming When flash was retired we added a few of our own games to the site that had been created in the Unity engine.

These worked well and are only really very simple games, however a while ago these stopped working all together.

Since we moved from sourcing and providing online flash games to focus more on app development, this has been left broken for some time now.
There was also a bit of problem with Safari support for some of these games too, which really stopped us promoting these games online.

After looking into this again recently, we found the cause and deployed a change that now means these games work online in your browser again!

Whats more, they even work on iphones again as some of the Safari 'bugs' have also been addressed.
This means they are now supported on android devices, mac os and windows (Works best on Chrome) and some of them are even playable in the Telsa browser (not all of them!).

We will try to make a few more simple games in future, to increase the number of games available to play online in your browser on HollettGaming.com!

"The parkwalker is a friendly face(s) who provide support and encouragement to walkers, as part of our commitment to increasing the number of people who walk at our events.

During the event, the parkwalker(s) will be positioned ahead of the Tail Walker but behind those who are running. They will provide encouragement and support to anyone who is walking and ensure everyone who is walking feels part of the parkrun community.

parkwalkers will also play an important role in highlighting the inclusive nature of parkrun to those who are yet to take part… just by being there."

This is one for Italy, to complete all the runs in Rome!

New Challenge: Albaloopy

Complete all the event locations in Scotland, twice!

Running Achievements Version 1.7.10 Released http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/195/RunningAchievementsVersion1710Released/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/195/RunningAchievementsVersion1710Released/ Fri, 10 Jun 2022 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming This week we have released the latest version of Running Achievements.

This addresses a change in the parkrun data where some users results are flipped the other way around, which in turn really messed up the last run showing the as your first run!

Also this caused challenges and completion dates to all be wrong.

With the changes made, it will not matter what way round your results show anymore as the app will now handle this.

We have also added a list of the goals or badges achieved for each run in the run result screen.
So now each run will list what it completed!

Running Achievements Version 1.7.4 Released http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/194/RunningAchievementsVersion174Released/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/194/RunningAchievementsVersion174Released/ Thu, 10 Mar 2022 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming This week we have released the latest version of Running Achievements.

The focus was on getting the map updated to work well on all types of mobile devices, biut also be cost effective.

We have now settled for a decent weigh up between functionality and costs (who knew maps in an app would be so costly to run!).

Dutch translations are also further implemented thanks to Renée Shortz and Marcia Dubbelaar! They have put in a lot of work to get the translations for Dutch up to where they are now and beyond (more to come later).

Other items in this release include long awaitied badges for a number of challenges such as the Beehive and Compass challenges:

We have also added a nice selection on Canadian Regions: (and yes we are aware of a bug with Canada Region now only showing one item in it we will fix next release!)

Finally some new challenges are included too such as the Highland:

Its free to use on Windows and may come later for other devices if demand is there for it.

Sector53 Development Log 6 http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/186/Sector53DevelopmentLog6/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/186/Sector53DevelopmentLog6/ Tue, 6 Apr 2021 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Version 1.23.1 of Sector53 our space based, asteroid mining game based on the old Amiga title “K240”, has now been released to our test team for both PC and Mac.

This brings a number of great updates moving it closer to a releasable game!

AI Changes:
Effort on this version has focused on getting the AI a little bit more sensible in terms of a playable enemy.
I've tweaked the attack patterns so they are not quite so frequent or aggressive as it was near impossible to actual survive without keeping a fleet of ships to protect yourself.
The AI now also choses an asteroid you own at random to attack instead of just your first asteroid. This will change later to be more targeted (instead of just any old random one), but for now this works much better.

Ship Enhancements:
Ship movement at asteroids is also slightly improved, we updated in a recent post about this, but further enhanced it.
The ships now move up and down as well as on the x and z axis so the movement is a lot smoother.
This also extends to the building of ships, we now have a ship yard that they come out of and fly up to orbit from.

Combat Updates:
Ships before attacked only 4 times per day, which wasn't greatly effective, however ok for performance reasons.
Not being overly happy with how the ship to ship combat worked, I have changed it to be more frequent firing but with less impact on hitting a target. This was it is a little less instant ship death on arriving at an enemy asteroid.
So the calculations now happen more like 10 times per day instead. These calculations have to be done regardless of if you are on the screen or not, for example when your ships are at 3 different asteroids all attacking at the same time.

Performance Updates:
With the above increase to ship calculations, I did notice a performance issue.
Thus a lot of updates to buildings shadows and other material effects have been optimised to increase frame rates when at an asteroid. There had been a number of effects and graphical elements on each building that are a bit overkill anyway, so these got removed as they don't have any drastic impact on appearance, but do provide a huge performance gain.

Version 1.23.2 will start development now, trying to focus more on the AI and story line to start bringing the gameplay together with the actual story, as well as being a more playable game against the AI.

This has some new features we have been working on, including Run Notes you can now add against each of your runs.

It enables you to mark if you ran with a dog, buggy, illness, injury and even if you ran with a faster or slower runner.
This should help you compare your runs against similar ones!

We have also made runs you can click in stats screens blue so you can click them and see more detailed run information!
The stats screen has also had a bit of a change to group similar stats into sections so its easier to read:

Apple users should get this in the next few days and Android users likley a bit faster (Google are always quicker to review and release!).

We hope you like the new changes!

Sudoku Today Game Released http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/180/SudokuTodayGameReleased/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/180/SudokuTodayGameReleased/ Tue, 5 Jan 2021 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming We have created a new game called Sudoku Today.
You guessed it, it's a Sudoku game!

With the end of flash games as we know it, we decided to see how quickly we could make a game, which is for all devices to run and works in any modern browser.

It took just one day to get an operational Sudoku game up and running, which is great news as we would like to release more games at this speed with modern browsers in mind.

Whats more, this version of Sudoku has two modes of play:

Classic Mode (as you would expect with numbers)

Colour Mode (no numbers here, just coloured blocks!)

Give it a try now here:

New Game In Development - Space Kids Adventures http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/179/NewGameInDevelopmentSpaceKidsAdventures/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/179/NewGameInDevelopmentSpaceKidsAdventures/ Sun, 11 Oct 2020 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming We have been working on a new game along side some of our other projects, codenamed 'Space Kids Adventures'.

A game created for my sons, for something to get involved in and learn how games are made during the lockdown and COVID situation!

Directed by the 6 year old, he wanted:

'a space game where you find parts of the ship to build it before blastoff to the moon' (his words not mine)

This is being made in only a few hours here or there that allow, when the boys are about to help direct and more importantly, play test it.

Expanding on his idea, my son has gone on to outline the gameplay further and just loves explaining it all to everyone in lots of detail!
So here are his ideas and what we have so far:

Gameplay:

Gameplay will feature a number of mini games to complete in order to build, launch and fly the rocket, as well as land on the moon and setup a moon base with 'domes' containing mini games to play in each.

Build The Rocket: Puzzle Platformer

The first mission is on earth at the space center, where you will guide your spacemen around the 3d world,
pressing switches to open doors and find parts of the rocket, before blasting off into space.

Somewhat similar feel to Lego games like 'Lego City Undercover'.

Dock With ISS: Top Down Arcade Style

Once you are in space, it's time to dock with the ISS to collect some supplies for the trip to the moon.

This is a top down view, with flight control similar to that of the classic 'Asteroids' game.

Load Em Up: Top Down Arcade Style

Onboard the ISS its time to float through the space station unlocking doors and finding the cargo bay to transfer the cargo to your ship.

This is mixture of the first two styles of play, floating your space man through the ISS.

To The Moon: ?

This level will see you guide the rocket to the moon and land it.

The style of this is undecided at the moment

The last update here was a couple of months back, so we havent got huge amounts to report, but since we are all on lock down with the COVID-19 situation, it gives you something to read!

 • Mining: Converted all ores to new class version
 • Campaigns: Redesign the campaign select screen
 • Campaigns: Updated campaign view screen to show the difficulty and victory conditions

 • Optimisation: Combined story line stages to minimise button presses, now we have better text scaling
 • Optimisation: Added Safe Area support for phones with notches - applied to most menus
 • Optimisation: Moved story dialogue into the campaign mission data instead of a separate data list so no cross referencing is needed
 • Optimisation: Updated scroll view calculations functions for better handling of different screen sizes

 • Main Menu: Added camera movement and Earth image updates

Running Achievements (Smadges) Version 1.3.4 Released http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/174/RunningAchievementsSmadgesVersion134Released/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/174/RunningAchievementsSmadgesVersion134Released/ Wed, 26 Feb 2020 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming The latest update to the Running Achievements (Smadges) app is now pushed to the live app stores.

This brings a few stat updates, some new country updates as well as a whole new section for World Tourists.

I'm very excited to announce that we have been working with the parkrun World Tourists group (not officially linked to parkrun might I add) - to get a new World Tourist feature built into the Running Achievements app!

This will benefit World Tourists with specific group achievements and badges.

This is an exclusive club for people who have run in 4 of more countries.

To access the World Tourist features, go to the menu (top left) and select the 'World Tourist' option.

The work on this is now completed and live on Android and iOS stores.

Other things worthy to note in this release:
- Countries: Added new country Netherlands
- Countries: added Eswatini and Namibia
- Countries: events in Eswatini and Namibia are now classified respectively instead of being under South Africa
- Translations: Add remaining Polish volunteer values from spreadsheet to code
- Stats: Add Volunteer Ratio
- GPS: updates Nendy when GPS updates location
- Android: Added a quit app button to the menu at the bottom

And finally, a big thank you to Johan Duvenhage who was instrumental in providing feedback on the map and gps issues in order to finally fix the problem with the map not working for South African users.

Sector53 Development Log 4 http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/173/Sector53DevelopmentLog4/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/173/Sector53DevelopmentLog4/ Fri, 3 Jan 2020 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Development continues on Sector53, our space based, asteroid mining game based on the old Amiga title “K240” by Gremlin Interactive.
Here is a bit of an update on how things have progressed since our last post.

Gameplay Updates:

New code for oxygen, water and radiation is now in place.
Radiation is caused by various buildings and each race has their own tolerance to that.
Building new radiation filters is needed in some cases.
Population will start to die if there is a lack of primary resources, or too much radiation.

Many upated to the UI have been happening too, like when building buildings you can now build more than one at a time instead of having to go back through the menus to pick it each time.

Ore trading is now being focused on to provide the core selling element of the game, this should be much more polished off in the coming months.

Ships:
New modular ship parts and a ship configurator has been developed, this should speed up adding ships into the game and will also pave the way for customising your own ships later in the development cycle.

Sector Map:

This has had a lot of updates to try make it more usable.

It enables sending ships to sectors you havent explored yet as well as sending ships and missiles to other asteroids when you have found them.
Asteroid engine control code has also been added in, where you can change the course of the asteroid should you need to (if you have built engines!).
This is pretty clunky at the moment, needs more attention!

Missiles:

There is a new missile purchase screen as well as a launch control screen.
Buys missiles and attack others with them.
Basic code is in place for this to work for the player attacking the enemy, but not the other way around just yet!

Buildings:

A few new buildings are in place too:

Trade Outpost
Defense Turret
Repair Facility
Radiation Filter

AI:

A few AI updates have been happening, though the focus is more on the player and trading of ore at the moment, they can now at least build their own ships to defend themselves with.

The AI ships (if they have built any) will fire upon yours should you be tempted to send some over for a visit.

Some other stuff worked on includes:

Building and Ship health bars added floating above them to indicate their damage level

Screenshake effects added

Ore and mining algorithm updates

Missiles code, missile launch animations and effects

Building menu filters by building classification

Ship to Ship combat added

Ship to Asteroid combat added

Laser beam and laser beam rendering scripts added to combats

Repair Facility coded to auto repair damaged buildings

Plus lots more and not forgetting many bug fixes!

Next Steps:

Development continues and will progress more into 2020, with monthly Alpha releases!

The most recent Alpha version (1.20.0) was released on 16th December 2019, to Patrons to play as it stands at the moment.

There is a PC and Mac OSX alpha release, playable now.

Running Achievements iOS App for parkrun updates http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/170/RunningAchievementsiOSAppforparkrunupdates/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/170/RunningAchievementsiOSAppforparkrunupdates/ Wed, 4 Dec 2019 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Since releasing the first version of Running Achievements (an app to track your badges and achievements at parkrun), we have had a lot of feedback from the parkrun community.

It's even been nicknamed 'Smadges' by the community!

There have been a number of updates released since launch from this feedback, more updates are planned (one should land later this week!).

Main features that have been added:

- Volunteer Badges and stats

- Translated Volunteer badges to German, Russian and Polish (others in progress)

- New achievements to complete (eg Dizzy Heights, Calendar Bingo, Obsessive achievements)

- Statistics screen with lots of great stats to view

- Event stats to compare your event times and how you have done versus your pb at that event

- iOS Game Center boards added for most runs, unique runs as well as the existing pb board

As well as all that, we have done a number of UI updates to improve the experiance and fixed a mountain of bugs.

Plans going forward:

- Add more translations of other languages

- More regional achievements

- GPS? We may look at adding some location based information later

- Android App!

Android is something we have had many requests for.

We are looking into adding this, though it costs money to do and thus is not the priority at the moment (its a free app with no earnings made from it).
It is planned for sure but will need some time investment too in order to figure out how we do that and sort through any differences in the Android platform, so there is a learning curve on this one too hence the delays on this. It will come!

If you have any any further feedback or suggestions, please leave a comment.

Sector 53 - The Backstory http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/168/Sector53TheBackstory/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/168/Sector53TheBackstory/ Tue, 26 Feb 2019 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Sector53 is our space asteroid management game, currently in development, based on an old Amiga game 'K240'.

As development is pushing on, a story line was needed, as with all great games!

Some work has been put into the backstory now, and many characters for the game have been created based on real people from the community giving feedback on the development stages.

We wanted to share the back story while you all wait for the game to be finished, so here it is:

Earth 2080

Population reaching critical levels.

Earths resources are strained.

Earth 2095

Population exceeds sustainability.

World population decreases due to war, disease and resource strains.

Earths resources are too far depleted to recover, overcrowding and conflicts threaten humanity.

Earth 2099

Phase one of plans to populate other planets begins with a Moon colony established to aid population pressures on earth and help aid survival techniques in harsh environments. Used as quick fix for over population on earth, not sustainable.

Earth 2100

The world alliance forms treaty to allow use of nuclear propulsion in space, based on Project Orion, aiding faster space travel.

Earth 2105

First Nuclear propulsion drives used in space craft, cutting travel times drastically, especially over longer distances.

Plans for population offload to other worlds in process.

Earth 2110 - 2150

Initial Colonies established on Saturn’s moon, Titan and Jupiter’s moon Europa now space travel times allow it. Offload of population on Earth starts, but these are harsh worlds, little incentive for the general population to live in these environments.

Earth 2153

A discovery of a vast sector in the Oort Cloud with mass asteroid clustering is found, nicknamed “Sector53”, seemingly created by an unknown cataclysmic event.

Rich in ore and precious metals that can be used for trade and resource material for planetary colonisation, the world alliance plans to move in….

Earth 2154

Mars, already populated and an ideal research location for a full research and development base. Mining colony established for testing asteroid mining methods to be used in Sector53.

World alliance releases statement of intent:

Sector53 mining colonies dubbed by the world alliance as an escape from earth, with the promise of free living, health care and entertainment for all, to help build future worlds of Eden.

The world alliance moves in on Sector53...

Sector53 Development Log 3 http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/167/Sector53DevelopmentLog3/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/167/Sector53DevelopmentLog3/ Thu, 1 Nov 2018 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Development continues on Sector53, our space based, asteroid mining game based on the old Amiga title “K240” by Gremlin Interactive.
Here is a bit of an update on things.

Previously we mentioned about working on the AI and this has continued.

This has been much harder than expected, so progress has been a little slow.

We have moved it forward somewhat and have a decent level of AI self-sufficiency, though a lot of this code needed to be re-written in order to advance it.

Further work in this area is really the focus moving forward, as the AI still can’t yet attack you or do much else than keep their asteroid running, which doesn’t give you as a player much of a challenge!

Much of the focus of the last few months has been on things like the sector map to navigate and move ships around. I was not happy with the flat 2D map, now this is a full 3D game.

Therefore this is in the process of being changed to a new 3D map.

This will give some nicer effects and actually in the long run be easier to develop on, as the 2D map was full of lots of calculations to convert positions and things to the 2D simplified versions.

The new 3D map makes this element easier to do by using an alternative camera and some clever bits of UI to pull it together.

It doesn’t look like much just at the moment as it is in process of the conversion.

More on this later.

During some down time while I was sick for a few weeks, I made some progress on the story line, along with a little help from the original developer of the Amiga game (K240), Graeme Ing!

He also writes Sci-Fi novels and provided some great ideas for Sector53’s background (Goes without saying we had some nice developer chats too!).

The community, including Graeme, have also continued to provide more feedback on the current Alpha released and have played some of these incomplete versions, just to give some idea of the feel and where it is heading.

From this I have added a lot more into the game, including adding in some of the community as actual characters in the story line.

Some other stuff worked on includes:

Saved Games

Load Games

Character Generation Scripts

Story Line scripts

Tutorial Level

New Music added (thanks to New Light Audio and Lemnisc8)

Performance updates and code refactoring

Many many bug fixes!

A few thanks are in order, as there are a number of people who have contributed so far and continue to do so.

So thank you all.

Here are a few people that deserve and extra thanks:

- Graeme Ing: a huge thanks to your support, development insight, story line ideas and most importantly play testing feedback!

- Ale: Some feedback very close to Graeme, helping focus efforts on the right areas

- Leyton Carter: For providing an initial placeholder sound track, many hours of hard work right there!

- JumailJ: For providing many great 3D models now in the game

- K240 Facebook Group: For giving support, feedback and further ideas

Moving forward, more work on the new map, sending ships to other locations and the campaign levels are under way, as well as more AI work of course!

A more recent Alpha version (1.15.1) was released on 31st October 2018, to Patrons to play as it stands at the moment.

There is a PC and Mac OSX alpha release, playable now.

You too can get the alpha version of the ga]]> http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/167/Sector53DevelopmentLog3/#comments_section Sector53 Development Log 2 http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/166/Sector53DevelopmentLog2/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/166/Sector53DevelopmentLog2/ Thu, 15 Mar 2018 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Since the first major Dev Log, Sector 53 (our asteroid mining game based on an old Amiga classic "K240") has had a number of key updates and progress is now picking up pace.

We wanted to keep you updated on this so you know what is coming.

We have been working hard on many AI elements of the code as previously mentioned, but now things are getting harder to program as everything ties together in the background.

A lot of rewrites of code have been needed to account for this and many new bugs have crept in too!

This is a shame in a way as it means there is little to show for our efforts, however it does mean there is a bit more to the game than there was and it is going in the right direction.

Buildings available to you have increased also, expanding the number of buildings to 26.

There are many more planned, including similar buildings to the original K240 game.

Along the same lines, many thoughts have gone into what we can learn and implement into the game that the original did so well.

Some of the nice to haves with be around spaceship configurations and assigning weapons to them, having alien specific ships and buildings (rather than all the same 3D models for all races), that kind of thing.

Some initial work into adding campaign selection has been added in too, this now allows for easy to add scenarios like how many enemies to have, which enemies to allow and how many asteroids, the potential sizes of asteroids and so on.

Should make adding actual campaigns to the game quite quick later when the actual gameplay/AI is finished.

The feedback from the community has been great too. Many new ideas have come out of this like being able to play as any race, not just the humans, being able to tax the population and so on.

Testers of early alpha builds have also provided some great suggestions which we have already implemented! Feedback like this is the best as we can cater to game to the players playing it.

There are so many things now planned in fact, it's going to take a while to implement it all, so we will focus on getting core things in to make a playable version before we add extra features later on.

If you want to get involved, we have also now setup a Patreon account where you can get rewarded by naming something in the game and also get access to the Beta and Alpha builds as we make it:

We started out with the speccy and spent many hours typing out pages of code to make a simple pong game.

We moved on to more advanced stuff with things like the Shoot Em Up Construction Kit (SEUCK) on the Amiga, Flash games on the PC and right through to today using Unity3D.

It's just hobby, but out of this HollettGaming was born.

Now I use my spare time to make games for people to play for free, no profit involved, just for the love of games!
I write a few reviews and news posts here and try to spend a few hours a week making games where I can.

It's time to ramp this up a bit, so I can get the games I have in mind built quicker and released for you all to play, whilst keeping it all free.

That's where we need your help. My dad and I can only create so much on our own!
We a bit of help, we can pay for music and sound effects, get some decent 3D modellers involved and hopefully push my time into the code and development instead of spending time on these elements myself or with my Dad!

Also, our website hosting costs a lot of money, we could do with help to keep that running too.

In return, we will of course try to release more games quicker for free and of course give all patrons early access to Alpha and Beta builds as well as other rewards.

You can give as little or as much as you like, starting from just $1, you will get rewards and get listed in our game credits!

Unity Tips - Adding headings and tooltips http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/164/UnityTipsAddingheadingsandtooltips/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/164/UnityTipsAddingheadingsandtooltips/ Tue, 7 Nov 2017 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming I thought I would give something back to the Unity community as everyone has been so helpful to me in the past.

This article will show you how to add headings, spacing and tool tips to your unity scripts so that they are spaced out and more organised in the 'inspector' view.

I found this extreemly helpful in viewing my variables and objects in a more organised manner than one big long list.

As soon as I found out about this, I added it to every script!

What's more, this is actually extreemly easy to do.

These are just extra lines you add to the script, below are examples in C Sharp, I'm sure these will work equally well on other languages.

1) Headings
These are the most handy one, they add a nice bold heading above your variables in the inspector.
Simply add this where you want the heading to show:
[Header("My Heading:")]

Simple!

2) Spacing
A nice one to separate things out a bit, you can decide how much of a gap to add with the value in brackets.
Simply add this line where you want a gap to appear:
[Space(10)]

Easy!

3) Tooltips
More helpful to remind you want this parameter is for, without the need to open your script and read any comments you made.
This one needs to go ABOVE the line you want to add a tool tip for, eg:

[Tooltip("My Strings Tool Tip")]
public string MyString = "Some string value";

And here is how your code might look once you add all these:

We hope you found this useful.
Happy coding!

Unity Used For Hollywood Style Movie http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/163/UnityUsedForHollywoodStyleMovie/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/163/UnityUsedForHollywoodStyleMovie/ Thu, 5 Oct 2017 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Unity have teamed up with Neill Blomkamp, who is the celebrated writer and director of District 9, Elysium, and Chappie.
Neill Blomkamp launched Oats Studios earlier this year as an experiment to develop his film ideas without needing the level of resources of a typical Hollywood studio and to speed up production using new technology.
Together they have worked on the short films "ADAM", which really showcase the Unity Engine and what it can achieve, not just in a gaming capacity, but now also in a rendering and cinematic sense.

These short films are only around 6 minutes long each, but they immerse you into a strange and intriguing world, leaving you wanting to know more about this ADAM fellow.
Everyone on the comments is begging for a full film or series to be made out of this, or even just more episodes, that's how good these short films are.

Well, in great timing of the release of the latest Unity Engine "2017.1", the next installment titled "ADAM: The Mirror" has recently been released.
This shows what can be achieved with some of the great new features of Unity like the new Cinematic engine, Cinemachine but also gives the fans a little more (even if it is only six minutes!).

Originally, Unity's Swedish demo team showcased the graphical quality achievable with Unity 5.4 by showing the first installment of ADAM, at the Game Developers Conference in 2016
Chris Harvey, Oats Studios' VFX Supervisor, explained "it blew people away, not only because it was visually fantastic, but the story was super intriguing with a massive cliffhanger."

He went on to explain why Unity is such a good choice for film makers:
"the main appeal of Unity's engine is the real-time rendering, which lets film makers adjust on the fly. Literally, you could put a hat on Adam, hit play, and watch the film with that"

Neill Blomkamp also detailed why Unity has helped production costs:
"The biggest thing for me was the cameras. If you're working live-action, you have no choice but to work with what you shot six months earlier."

In this particular short film, he says Oats started the film with harsh overhead lighting, but later changed the position of the sun, which led to softer, more appealing visuals.

The next chapter "ADAM: The Prophet!" arrives soon too, which we can't wait for.

In the mean time, enjoy the film and check out Oat Studios YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCD4ZEYIBnHIC2DUhiizMOHg for their other films.

Transport Tycoon on your phone http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/161/TransportTycoononyourphone/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/161/TransportTycoononyourphone/ Wed, 26 Jul 2017 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Following on from our post about Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic for iOS, I decided to look for other such retro ports and found another gem of a game.
This time, another Chris Sawyer's classic, Transport Tycoon!

Again it is a rebuild for the iPhone / iPad with touch in mind, but the main game is pretty much the same, with a few updates and enhancements to boot.
No annoying adverts to be found either, you are buying the full game.

For those of you who don't remember the original, it's a transport management game where you buy delivery trucks, trains and planes to transfer passengers and goods between cities.
You can rename cities and build routes by road or rail to your desired locations.

Another game I lost many a day / weekend playing on my PC back in the day, it's time to do it all again this time on my phone!

Like with other ports of such tycoon games, the tabs and buttons are a tad bit small and bit of a fiddle on a phone.
Best use your iPad for this or at least an iPhone 6 or bigger screen is recommended.

Probably due to massive bias on my part owing to nostalgia, but a HollettGaming rating of 5 stars: you'll be playing for ages and ages, lots of optiions and scenarios to play, graphics are retro of course but appealing all the same, and you will find it hard to put down.

I'll try find a few more gems like this in future posts!

Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic now on app store http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/160/RollercoasterTycoonClassicnowonappstore/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/160/RollercoasterTycoonClassicnowonappstore/ Mon, 24 Jul 2017 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming So we just found this!
Chris Sawyer's original Rollercoaster Tycoon and Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 was released on the App Store as one game, Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic, back in December (how did we miss this?).

The game has been rebuilt for the iPhone / iPad with touch in mind, but the main game is exactly the same, it's so similar infact it feels like a full port.
This time though, you get both original games 1 and 2 in the one app, with all the scenarios of the original two games.
The expansion packs are there too, but they are offered as in app purchases.
Mind you, that's the only in app purchase to speak of and no annoying adverts to be found, you are buying the full game here.

For those of you who don't remember the original, it's a theme park management game with some sweet rollercoaster building, you can fully customise pretty much everything about your park, including colour schemes, every twist and turn of the rollercoaster, the jobs each handy man does, times between ride inspections and so on.
I lost many a day / weekend playing this on my PC back in the day, and expect a few such days to pass me by on my phone now!

The only down side is the tabs and buttons to change ride prices and other buttons are a tad bit small and bit of a fiddle on a phone.
Having said that, it is well done and not too much of a pain to do on an iPhone 6 though I wouldn't want to bother on anything smaller than that.

The iPad fairs better, just a bit easier to tap the tiny buttons with.

So an overall HollettGaming rating of 5 stars: you'll be playing for ages and ages, lots of optiions and scenarios to play, graphics are retro of course but appealing all the same, and you will find it hard to put down.

Timekeepers Remake Of Amiga Classic http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/156/TimekeepersRemakeOfAmigaClassic/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/156/TimekeepersRemakeOfAmigaClassic/ Sun, 18 Dec 2016 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming After a 20 year break from game development, Vulcan Software (creator of classic puzzle adventure games Valhalla and Timekeepers on the Amiga) have confirmed a remake of Timekeepers is indeed in progress.

We got the the chance to speak to the original developer of Timekeepers and Director of Vulcan Software, Paul Carrington, to ask a few questions about the plans and development progress so far.

For those of your not familiar with the original series, it's a cross between Lemmings and Cannon Fodder.

Of course there may be new generations of players not familiar with these either, so here's what Paul says about the game:

"For anyone who doesn't know what this game was all about, it was a simplistically complex puzzle game, which involved platoon management. You issue commands to your platoon of Timekeepers by pasting symbols within their tile based world and they will do their best to follow your orders, your goal was to manoeuvre your platoon through complex terrain and eventually reach the final level where you could dismantle bombs left by the evil emperor Zorg. If you succeeded then you preserved time. It was a game that made you think, it was extremely simple to operate but very complicated in design and demanded a slow approach, requiring logical and lateral thinking."

The original game was developed in an era where only very small filesize was possible, with very little memory to play with.

Paul had to program the game and images on what would fit on a 1.4mb disk. He also only had 32 colours available to use too!

Creativitiy and forward thinking was therefore needed, which is why this became such a great puzzle game, it was simple yet highly addictive.

Nowadays, 1.4 mb is barely enough for a single picture taken on your phone at very low resolution, imagine trying to program a whole game and images all in that space!

The time has come for modern technologies to take this classic and remake it again.

"I’m going to take the Amiga classic game Timekeepers and recreate it using the latest technology. I’ve not developed computer games for some time and coming back to it (almost 23 years later) I am blown away by how far development tools and hardware has progressed which has got me excited about creating games again."

The original was highly addictive, with the puzzles and many levels keeping you busy.

The concept was to plan out a route and actions for your hapless crew to get as many of them to the transporter and therefore next level as possible.

So what will the remake bring?

"This time around it will be presented in a 3D environment with all of the amazing things available like dynamic lighting, geometry based collision, particle effects and physics. "

Paul goes on to explain "I want to include as much of the original game (and all of the original levels) into the new version but at the same time I want to introduce more operation commands, more animations and to expand upon the detail and interaction within the world".

http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/156/TimekeepersRemakeOfAmigaClassic/#comments_section No Mans Sky Free Update http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/155/NoMansSkyFreeUpdate/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/155/NoMansSkyFreeUpdate/ Mon, 28 Nov 2016 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming Hello Games have now released a long awaited 'feature' update to the game.

It adds some more diversity to the game and long awaited 'base' building.

You can also hire aliens in your base to help out.

There are also plans to release more updates, so is this the start of adding updates to make the game what was originallly promised?

 • Recruit alien lifeforms to help research new technology. Farming, engineer, weapons and science specialists are hirable from Space Stations
 • Use Terminus Teleporters in Space Stations to teleport to and from your base at will
 • Expand your base with storage containers to stockpile precious resources and rare products
 • Find an even more beautiful location and you can simply dismantle your previous homestead to refund all of the spent resources

Farming

 • Cultivate biome dependent crops outdoors, or inside your base or Freighter using Hydroponic Labs
 • Plants grow over time and offer a steady supply of resources to be harvested

Sector53 Development Log 1 http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/153/Sector53DevelopmentLog1/ http://www.hollettgaming.com/newsarticle/153/Sector53DevelopmentLog1/ Fri, 23 Sep 2016 00:00:00 GMT Latest News HollettGaming It's been a little while now since we decided to start building Sector 53, our asteroid mining game, based on an old Amiga classic "K240".

Things have moved on nicely since our announcement a year ago.

Development is a little slow though, as it's only a small indie development team, working in spare time (and not paid anything!).

In the year of time we have had, we've been creating new 3D models for the buildings, updating the game objects and other 3D elements to start giving a bit more depth and added a lot of the gameplay code in now.

The main focus however has been on the actual mechanics of the game, the core AI and the ability to save and load all this data.

There is a heck of a lot to do before this is going to be playable, but it's core mechanics are working well now.

You can now build up a nice little ecosystem on the asteroid and mine it, as well as build ships, send them to other sectors to explore, find enemy asteroids and attack them!

Missile silos that launch long range attacks are starting to be programmed now too.

AI programming is throwing up some challenges with the amount of code needed to figure everything out that each AI player needs to do, so this part is taking a lot of time to progress.

Though, the AI can now do a bit of thinking for itself and build required buildings, ships and start mining resources. It can't do much else yet and their ships wont go any where or attack anyone, but they are self sufficient at least!

There are plans for a number of Races to pit the player up against, each with their own strategy and difficulty.

Back to the gameplay, we now have a solid 20 or so buildings to build with many more planned.

Shornsoft are kindly proving a number of buildings for us.

Only 3 ship models are ready but we are looking at getting some user submitted ships into the game to help move things along quicker.

Twitter follower @CGLuke has provided our first user ship and is already in the game! Hit us up on twitter or on our contact page if you want to get involved and we will send you some details on what we need.

The user interface is not very pretty, a bit clunky and not really how it will end up, but it's functional. We will work more on cosmetics once the game is playable.

Feedback is welcomed and don't forget to Follow us on Twitter for more frequent screenshots and gameplay videos as we make it!

Take a look at some of the latest screenshots below.
